What Skool does well
Skool is popular for good reasons, and it's worth being clear about them before you look anywhere else.
- It's fast. You can open a group, add a classroom and post a calendar in an afternoon. There's very little to set up or decide.
- It's simple for members. One feed, one classroom, one calendar. Nobody gets lost.
- Levels and a leaderboard reward members for taking part, which keeps a lot of groups lively.
- Discovery. People already on Skool can find your group, which a brand-new website can't offer on day one.
- A cheap way in. The Hobby plan is ~$9 a month but takes about 10% of each sale. The Pro plan is ~$99 a month with a lower fee that covers card processing.
If you're testing an idea with a few dozen people, Skool is a sensible place to start. This guide is for the moment after that, when the group is working and you start to wonder what you're building on.
Why people look for a Skool alternative
Most people who leave Skool aren't unhappy with the software. They've outgrown renting it. The same reasons come up again and again:
- Every group looks the same. Your brand is a picture and a name on Skool's layout. Members remember Skool, not you.
- Members live on Skool. They sign in to Skool, use Skool's app and can browse other groups one tap away from yours.
- The bill never ends. The monthly fee runs for as long as the group does, and the platform decides future prices and rules.
- Courses are basic. The classroom works well for simple lessons. Quizzes, certificates, drip schedules, a website with sales pages and email marketing usually mean other tools.
- Your audience is in their system. You can export your members, but day to day they belong to someone else's platform.
Skool alternatives compared
| Option | Best for | Price shown | Who owns it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Circle | A polished, flexible community with spaces, events and paywalls | ~$89 to ~$199 a month, billed yearly, plus 1% to 2% of sales | Circle |
| Mighty Networks | Communities that want courses, events and a network feel | Several plans; Growth is ~$360 a month billed yearly (~$430 month to month) | Mighty Networks |
| Kajabi | Course businesses that also want a community, website and email | ~$179 to ~$499 a month | Kajabi |
| Discord or Facebook Groups | Free communities and chat | Free to run; paid access usually needs extra tools | Discord or Meta |
| Your own platform Deedmade™ | Established groups that want their own name, app and member list | $2,499 once, 0% of your sales | You |
Each alternative, honestly
Circle gives you far more control than Skool: spaces you arrange yourself, events, courses, paywalls and better branding. Its low monthly prices are billed a year at a time (~$1,068 up front on Professional), and the lower plans take a share of your sales. A good pick if you want a nicer rented home and don't mind the yearly bill. See Skool vs Circle.
Mighty Networks mixes community, courses and events, and keeps its fully branded apps for its custom-priced top tier. It suits hosts who like its network features and plan to grow into a bigger plan.
Kajabi comes at it from the other side: a course business first, with a website, email marketing, funnels and a community. It's more than most community hosts need, and priced like it. If your courses earn more than your group, read Kajabi vs Skool.
Discord and Facebook Groups are free and familiar, and fine for a free community. For a paid one, you'll be stitching together payments, access and courses with bots and other tools, and both can change their rules overnight.
Owning your platform means the community, courses, live sessions, website and email run on accounts in your name. With Deedmade™, you pay $2,499 once (the early-bird price until December 31, 2026; the regular price is $3,900) and get one plan with every feature: community spaces with levels and a leaderboard, courses with quizzes and certificates, live sessions, booking, events, a shop and email marketing, in a members app with your name and icon. What it doesn't have is Skool's directory: new members come from your own content, list and referrals.
What three years costs
The fairest comparison is the total, over the years you plan to run the group. Skool Pro at ~$99 a month is ~$3,560 over three years and ~$5,940 over five, and the group still lives on Skool at the end.
Owning has cost less from month 26. After that, renting keeps going and owning doesn't.
Owning still has running costs: the card fee on each sale (as anywhere), your domain, and Cloudflare hosting, which is free or about $5 a month with live features. The $49 a month care plan is optional, and so is listing your app in the App Store and Google Play ($99 a month). Deedmade™ takes 0% of your sales, and there's no monthly fee required.
How to choose
- Stay on Skool if you're still finding out whether people will pay, or if most of your new members find you through Skool itself.
- Choose Circle or Mighty Networks if you want more control and branding but are happy to keep renting, and the yearly charge and share of sales are fine for you.
- Choose Kajabi if courses are the main business and you want email and sales funnels in the same monthly subscription.
- Own your platform if the community is a business you'll run for years, you want your own name on members' phones, and you'd rather pay once than forever.
One quick test: look at where your last twenty members came from. If it was mostly your own posts, videos, email list and word of mouth, Skool's discovery isn't doing much for you, and owning loses you very little.
Moving off Skool without losing members
Export your member list, set up the new home first, import your members so access is waiting, and email them twice before the switch. Keep the Skool group open for a few weeks with a pinned post pointing to the new place. Members who pay through Skool keep access until their paid-up date, then rejoin on your platform. The full plan is in how to move your members off Kajabi or Skool.
Want to see your own version first? Build yours free: no credit card, a working preview usually within the hour, and you pay only if you approve it.
Prices of other companies are approximate, from their own pricing pages on October 11, 2026 (yearly-billing prices, add-ons and plans not in our calculator were checked on November 6, 2026), and they change. Where a page shows a monthly price that is billed a year at a time, we say so. Check their websites for today's prices.
Questions people ask
What is the best Skool alternative?
It depends on what you want to change. For more control while still renting, Circle or Mighty Networks. For a course business with email and a website, Kajabi. To stop paying monthly and own the platform under your own name, a platform you own, such as Deedmade™, at $2,499 once (the early-bird price until December 31, 2026; the regular price is $3,900) with 0% of your sales.
Is there a free Skool alternative?
Discord and Facebook Groups are free to run, but they aren't built for paid memberships: taking payments, locking content and running courses usually need extra tools. Free options suit a free community. For a paid one, budget for a proper platform.
Can I move my Skool members to another platform?
Yes. Export your member list from Skool, import it into the new platform, and email members their new sign-in before you switch. Run both for a few weeks. Members who pay through Skool keep access until their paid-up date, then rejoin on the new platform.
Does Skool take a cut of my sales?
On the Hobby plan, about 10% of each sale plus a small fee per payment. On Pro the fee is lower and covers card processing. Check skool.com for today's rates.
Will I lose Skool's discovery if I leave?
Yes, people browsing Skool won't find your group there any more. Many established groups get most new members from their own content, email list and referrals, so check where your recent members came from before you decide.
