The short answerUse Stripe if card processors accept your kind of business: it pays straight into your bank and works with everything. Use Whop if Stripe restricts what you sell, as with some trading and investing education.
Stripe
- A card processor: members pay you, and the money goes into your bank.
- Takes a fee on each payment (in the US, around 2.9% plus 30 cents for a standard card payment; check stripe.com/pricing for yours).
- Handles subscriptions, trials, discount codes, invoices and sales tax tools.
- Has rules about what it accepts. It doesn't allow some businesses (funded prop trading and get-rich-quick offers, for example) and restricts others, such as investment services.
Whop
- A payments and membership platform that's popular with trading, investing and other online communities.
- Often accepts businesses that card processors turn away.
- Members manage their membership on Whop.
- Check Whop's own site for its current fees.
How to choose
- Read Stripe's list of restricted businesses. If yours isn't on it, Stripe is the simpler choice.
- If you teach trading or investing, or Stripe has turned you down before, look at Whop.
- Some businesses use both: Whop for memberships and Stripe for a shop, event tickets or invoices.
