How to

How to build a membership website in 9 steps

By Deedmade™, updated 2 min read

The short answerDecide what members get and what it costs, choose where it will live (rented or owned), set up your domain, payments and email, add your first content, then invite a small group before you open it to everyone.
  1. Decide what members get. A course, a community, live calls, downloads, or a mix. Start with the one thing people already ask you for.
  2. Decide the price and the shape. Monthly, yearly, one-time, or a free tier with a paid upgrade. A free trial or a low first month helps people try it.
  3. Choose where it lives. Rent a platform (monthly, quick to start), build it yourself (cheap, lots of upkeep) or own a finished one (one cost, yours to keep). The alternatives guide compares them.
  4. Get your domain. yourbrand.com for the website, and a part of it, like members.yourbrand.com, for the members area.
  5. Set up payments. Stripe is the usual choice. Some businesses, like trading education, may need Whop: see Stripe or Whop.
  6. Set up email from your own domain. Sign-in codes, receipts and newsletters should come from you, not a platform's address, so they reach inboxes.
  7. Add your first content. Enough for a member's first week: a welcome, two or three lessons, and somewhere to ask questions. You can add the rest as you go.
  8. Write the welcome. A short welcome email and a Get started list so new members know what to do first.
  9. Invite a small group first. Ten to twenty people, at a founding price. Fix what confuses them, then open it to everyone.
